Peru is largely a visa-free country. Most countries from the Americas and Western Europe do not require a tourist visa to enter Peru, and the maximum length of stay granted by the authorities is 183 days.

Citizens of the United States of America and Canada do not require a Visa to enter the country as tourists. (90 days)

As of May 2019, the «International Agreement between the Republic of Peru and the United Arab Emirates on the exemption of tourist visas for Holders of Ordinary Passports and Holders of Diplomatic, Special or Service Passports» entered into force. Persons who intend to remain in the territory of the other country for a period greater than 90 days must obtain the corresponding visa previously. (International Convention No. 1894019-1)

In recent years, the Government of Peru, in order to promote tourism in the country, has signed bilateral agreements with other countries for visa-free entry as tourists. Please contact us for more information.

The people of Peru are characterized by its friendliness and hospitality. In the vast majority of tourist places there is surveillance and security. However, there are areas of the city that are not safe, so we recommend that you check with the hotel or with us before going anywhere.

If you want to take a taxi, do it through the application or request one at the hotel.

When you are on the streets you must be careful when crossing the streets and be careful with your personal belongings.

Upon your arrival you can change money at the airport. We recommend changing only what is necessary for immediate expenses since the exchange rate is lower at the airport.

In the city you will find «exchange houses» or banks where you can exchange currency. We do not recommend doing it to people on the street. Order low denomination bills and coins.

During your stay, carry the necessary cash with you, coins and low-denomination bills. In case you pay with a credit card, do not hand it over or lose sight of it. Make the payment at the time with the POS to avoid cloning or data theft.

The coast

From May to September Lima is covered by a thin layer of fog, usually in the morning and occasionally a light rain called “garua”. The weather is cold and humid, and windy. From November to April are the summer months on the coast. At this time there is sun throughout the coastline and the temperature of the ocean is ideal for swimming.

The Andes (highlands)

The Andes have two very marked seasons. From April to November it rains occasionally with a lot of sun during the day which allows you to appreciate the mountains and the blue sky, and at night the temperature drops. From December to May is the rainy season, which can be sunny but the sun could disappear into the clouds from one moment to another. You can get a little wet so we recommend having a poncho (or light raincoat) with you. Even so, it is possible to visit Machu Picchu or another tourist place in The Andes. At night the weather is more moderate.

Jungle

The Jungle of Peru has a subtropical climate and it rains frequently from October to April, and the nights are cold. During the dry season the temperature can reach 32 degrees or more. The humidity is constant throughout the year. The use of mosquito repellent and yellow fever vaccine is recommended in case you enter the jungle.

Altitude sickness or Soroche (Quechua, Inca language of Peru) is characterized among its most common symptoms by difficulty breathing, body discomfort, dizziness, headache, stomach pain and vomiting. This happens when the body becomes dehydrated and cannot get enough oxygen from the air at high altitude. The symptoms do not necessarily appear on the first day, they can also occur later and usually last up to 3 days.

To prevent altitude sickness or soroche you should:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking water in small sips.
  • Take everything easy, walk slowly. Take your time as your body adjusts to the altitude.
  • Rest or get some sleep upon arrival, this will help you acclimatize faster.
  • Eat more carbohydrates like healthy snacks, energy bars or nuts.
  • If possible, consume coca tea or chew coca leaves.
  • Avoid alcohol, fatty foods at least within the first 24-48hrs.
  • You can take aspirin or Diamox before your arrival. Consult your doctor before travelling.

In the city, most hotels, restaurants and some main parks have free Wi-Fi connection. If you wish, you can buy a chip upon arrival at the airport with a data package or activate your roaming.

  • Do not drink tap water.
  • In most countries it is not allowed to re-enter with coca leaves or coca tea.
  • If you take or take photos with vicuñas, llamas, women or children in traditional dress, they will ask for money in exchange. This generally occurs in Cuzco and its surroundings.
  • You can bargain for the purchases you make. Do have a little fun with that.
  • The plumbing in Peru works differently. Do throw toilet paper in the garbage can, not in the toilet because it can cause blockages.
  • Learn some basic words in Spanish. A percentage of people speak English but it is not very common, specially in areas outside Lima.
  • Peru is a gastronomic paradise. Go ahead and taste its food and fruits. You will be amazed.
  • Peru has many cultural festivities in the year, in the following link you will be able to know some of them so that they can coincide with your trip.
