Peru: First culinary destination in the world
If travelling and good food is your passion, this article is for you.
Peru has been the first culinary destination in the world for 8 consecutive years, an award granted by the World Travel Awards (Brand recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of industry excellence). Placing 2 of its restaurants within the 50 Best Restaurants in the world as is the case of “Central” and “Maido” with the 4th and 7th place respectively, both in Lima. This positions Peru as a gastronomic destination for excellence.
Why is the food in Peru so delicious?
This is because it has an insuperable amount of native products and inputs that make the traditional cuisine a delicacy, to this we must add the various migrations that the country received, such as Chinese, Japanese, Italians, Arabs, Africans, Hispanics among others, enriching the recipes, merging styles, adding inputs, adapting and creating new dishes that would later become part of a large number of existing stews in the kitchen.
Each region of Peru has its own characteristic dishes, some of which can be found throughout the year, others are only eaten on special days and others are prepared only on holidays.
In order to experience the full culinary experience, we recommend the following:
- Visit a good tourist restaurant. You can look for recommendations in forums such as Trip advisor.
- Visit a local market. There you can learn more about the ingredients used in the dishes. You can also try something to eat.
- Let your senses take over. If it looks and smells good, try it!
- Ask locals which restaurants they recommend.
- Don’t get carried away by appearances. Sometimes the «huariques» (a term that Peruvians use to refer to places where you can eat well, at a good price and in a home environment) are the ones with the best food.
- Live the full culinary experience, learning to cook some Peruvian dishes.
- Last but not least, don’t forget to try the desserts and drinks.
