Downtown Lima
One of the main attractions of the city of Lima is its historic center. Lima was founded on January 18, 1535, by Francisco Pizarro and the Plaza Mayor was built 43 years later by Viceroy García Sarmiento de Sotomayor for use as a market, bullring, and place of execution.
Around the main square are the most relevant historical monuments such as the Great Cathedral of Lima, the Government Palace, the Convent of San Francisco, the Great Park of the Wall, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipality of Lima and the Congress of the Republic.
Every day at 11:45 am the changing of the guard takes place in the Government Palace which can be seen from just outside the palace perimeter. It should be noted that on Sundays they do a small additional show with horses to the delight of families and tourists.
Very close to the Government Palace is the Bar Cordano. This bar is the oldest in Lima and you can go in to have a delicious Pisco sour or try some delicious artisanal sandwiches, among others. But when it comes to Pisco sours, we find the bars of the Hotel Bolívar and the Hotel Maury where they prepare very good cocktails. We also find the Plaza Chabuca Granda where there are small improvised shows and stalls selling typical delights.
If you want to go a little further, we find Capón Street a few blocks from the center, where there are many Chinese-Peruvian food restaurants (Chifa) and dishes that should definitely be tried.
We recommend visiting the center of Lima with a guide so that he can tell you more about the history of this city, visit the recommended places and enjoy a nice day. Comfortable clothes and slippers will be necessary to walk through the picturesque streets of the center.
